Metallurgical Engineer, R&D (Automotive)

Overview / Job Summary Aleris is a global leader in the manufacture and sale of aluminum rolled products, with approximately 14 facilities in three geographically aligned business units in North America, Europe and China. We serve a variety of end-use industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, building and construction, transportation, packaging, and consumer goods.   Our Rolled Products North America (RPNA) division in Lewisport, Kentucky is seeking to add a talented Metallurgical Engineer to its Research & Development (Material & Process) team. The individual in this position will use his/her knowledge to build and curate technical knowledge of metallurgical aspects of rolled aluminum products and the critical processes used to create them, discover innovative solutions to technical problems, develop new products in order to meet our customers' requirements and to enter new markets, support product implementation and customer qualification, improve existing products to satisfy internal goals or customer needs, and to create, improve and standardize the processesrequired to make these products in order to ensure customer satisfaction. This position requires an individual with technical ability, a passion for new technology, and excellent communication skills. Responsibilities Include Work safely, in compliance with all corporate, plant, local, state and federal safety rules and regulations. Keeping abreast of current policies, procedures, and ensuring outside vendors/contractors comply with the same. Investigate, develop and provide recommended solutions for any safety issues related to plant equipment requiring field or project engineering as assigned.  Develop and maintain a high degree of understanding of aluminum Automotive Sheet Products in mainly 6xxx Alloys.  Build and exploit technical knowledge of linking the desired metallurgical microstructure of rolled aluminum products with the critical thermomechanical process parameters to create this microstructure. Implement and manage projects for the development, testing, and improvement of aluminum alloys. Partner with end use automotive customers to develop new product applications.  Develop and implement successful manufacturing practices for production of newly developed products. Document and publish standard process requirements. Ensure adherence to all process specifications. Interface with plant operations personnel to make sure needed practices are implemented; train employees as needed.  Review customer specifications and determine applicability of existing Aleris products; Recommend and execute improvements to existing products and/or implement development projects in order to provide products that successfully meet customer specification requirements.  Support product implementation and customer qualification. Review product performance and propose corrective action for issues that arise.  Develop and maintain relationships with outside technical bodies, consultants, colleagues in other Aleris facilities, testing labs, key customers, and universities to understand current developments in the manufacture of automotive aluminum sheet and customer applications. Required Qualifications A Bachelor's degree in metallurgical/materials science engineering with 5+ years of related industrialexperience or a Master's or Doctorate degree with 2+ years of related industrialexperience. Experience with aluminum alloys, methods of their manufacture including all critical aspects of thermomechanical processing, and detailed knowledge of international standards for aluminum products. Detailed knowledge of all supplied markets, product requirements, and customer processes and applications from a wide range of customers, especially those in the automotive industry. Strong understanding and experience in metallography and destructive and non-destructive material testing methods and standards. 2-10 years of related industrialexperience. Technical and process management skills are needed in this position, with potential ability to work multiple projects simultaneously. Must possess strong decision making and problem solving skills including the ability to solve problems while exhibiting practical judgment and realistic understanding of the issues involved.  Ability to overcome obstacles and find reasonable resolutions to situations on a case by case basis as encountered.  Strong computer skills with experience in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint  Ability to effectively communicate and present technical information to all levels within the organization. Preferred Qualifications A Doctorate degree in metallurgical/materials science engineering. Aluminum Automotive Body Sheet Manufacturing experience. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster.
